Letter from the Artist

Dear Friends of Freedom:

All great things begin with a dream, a vision. As a professional sculptor of 24 years, I’ve dedicated my life to creating visual, tangible figurative sculpture that lifts people.

Several years ago I was asked by Kevin Hall, of the Statue of Responsibility committee, to create a prototype for this monument. My goal was to create a piece that was a simple shape yet powerful in meaning. The two gripping hands symbolize our responsibility that comes with our liberty and our freedom. The power is in its simplicity. I envision the sculpture cast in gleaming stainless steel, 300 feet above ground level. I believe the completed monument will become a worldwide symbol of inspiration for future generations and will help bring our nation, and the world, together.

I see a large Pathway surrounding the monument. Visitors walking through this Pathway will experience artistic representations of responsibility as sculpted by selected artists from countries around the world. These sculptures, up to 30 feet in height, will provide an international experience to the powerful message of the Statue of Responsibility monument.

The Statue of Responsibility monument will stand as a “bookend” to the Statue of Liberty monument, one on the East coast – one on the West coast, completing the brilliant idea of Viktor Frankl and visually reminding all freedom loving people on the planet that it takes liberty and responsibility to maintain freedom.

Sincerely,

Gary Lee Price, NSS
Sculptor
