SOR Newsletter #15

Issue Number 15
16 March 2006
Greetings Friends of the Foundation, and Friends of Freedom!!
Many good developments have happened since our last project update in December 2005. Listed here is a summary of those developments:
- The trustees met in December and among other items, approved a policy that allows the Foundation to acquire new board members as the Foundation grows and the monument project speeds up. Specific terms of service, tasks to be completed, suggested donation amounts etc. are all listed in this policy.
- Thanks to an idea suggested by board member Michael Levine, our commissioned book project is well underway. Our editor has acquired articles from 116 authors who have written about some aspect of responsibility in society. These will be pruned down to a final of count of 50 articles. Design for the book jacket has been completed and arrangements to pre-sell the book and have it distributed are underway. The Foundation will use the book as a public relations tool as well as a fund raising tool. Invitations have been sent to Senator John McCain and Bishop Desmond TuTu to write the foreword for the book.
- New corporate and institutional partners include:
- The Good Idea Group, CA
- Prosper, Inc., UT
- The Center of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis, Argentine Catholic University, Argentina
- New members include:
- Paul C. Godfrey, Ph.D, UT
- Paul Rusesabagina, Belgium
- Dr. Claudio Cesar Garcia Pintos, Argentina
- Tom Holdman, UT
- Dr. Nabyl Eddahar, Morocco
- George S. McGovern, SD
- Michael Levine, one of our trustees, arranged to have our Statue of Responsibility Foundation website listed on his Levine E-Lert (LBN E-Lert) electronic email service as the ‘Charity of the Week’ on December 17 and 18, 2005. His company’s e-news service is read daily by over 145,000 influential people worldwide.
- Moved to a front burner project, is making our formal presentations to each of the four potential cities where the monument will be built. It is our intent to begin these presentations soon, with the plan to have a community and location confirmed by the end of 2006. The four potential locations are: San Diego Harbor, Los Angeles coastal area (Long Beach Harbor), San Francisco Bay, and Puget Sound (Seattle).
Info on these new members:
1. Paul Godfrey - Paul wrote a major research paper about how valuable giving to philanthropic causes is to corporations. He is advising us on corporations that may be interested in providing sponsorship donations to the monument.
2. Paul Rusesabagina - Paul is the main character portrayed in the movie “Hotel Rwanda”. He will create ‘buzz’ about the monument project as he tours the world speaking out against genocide. If you have not yet seen the movie, I highly recommend it. Paul was directly responsible for saving over 1,200 lives in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, Africa, which ended in the killing of 1 million people in 100 days. Paul was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bush in November 2005. Paul is a member of our International Honorary Advisory Council.
3. Dr. Pintos - Dr. Pintos is the director of the Logotherapy Institute at the Argentine Catholic University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Pintos is also a contributing author for our book. He has invited the Foundation to introduce the monument project at upcoming conventions in Argentina 2007. Dr. Pintos is a member of our International Honorary Advisory Council.
4. Tom Holdman New member of our ‘Building Committee’. - Tom and his company, Holdman Studios, will be responsible for designing the stained glass sections in the Visitors’ Center. Tom is an internationally acclaimed artist.
5. Dr. Nabyl Eddahar - Dr. Eddahar is a Senior Fulbright Scholar living in Morocco. Dr. Eddahar is Muslim and will be a contributing author in our book. Dr. Eddahar is a member of our International Honorary Advisory Council.
6. George S. McGovern (ret. UN Ambassador and US Senator from South Dakota) - George McGovern ran against Richard Nixon in the presidential race of 1972. Still active at age 83, Sen. McGovern is involved in humanitarian causes such as world hunger. George McGovern is a member of our National Honorary Advisory Council.
7. A new fund raising plan, that is designed to attract both new board members and donors (corporate, individual and foundations), has recently been approved by the board of trustees and will soon be implemented.
In conclusion: This year, 2006, is the Foundation’s year to turn the corner on fund raising. We have several plans in place now which will begin this turning. Our organization is well represented by dedicated individuals from around the world. I am convinced that we will succeed in our cause to build the ‘most compelling monument of the 21st Century’.
Thank you for your commitment and dedication to this historic undertaking.
“Success on any major scale requires you to accept responsibility!! In the final analysis, the one quality that all successful people have is the ability to take on responsibility.”- Michael Korda
I extend my personal appreciation to each of you who have taken on this additional responsibility amidst your busy personal lives, to help in ways that only you can, to see that the Statue of Responsibility is built. Every bit of energy, every small task, every donation of time or money, every action to help create ‘buzz’ about the project, has an impact on our ultimate success.
